School Crosswalk
Makeovers

On August 10, the City’s Traffic
Engineering Division will take approximately 14 workers from their desk
jobs at the City Administration Building into the field for a
last-minute push to finish applying long-life pavement markings to
school crosswalks.
The City has nearly 440 school crosswalks on their high-priority list,
and wants to complete them before
school begins in late August. A contractor was hired to complete the
project, but scheduling problems left the work to be done by City
workers. City crews are currently working Monday through Saturday to
complete the work and CAB workers joining them could mean the
high-priority crosswalks are done by the time school starts.
The crosswalks are
being coated with a thermal plastic material that is brighter and
expected to last four times longer than regular paint. Thanks to Pikes
Peak Rural Transportation Authority funds, the City will be able to use
thermal plastic material on all crosswalks. These markings will only
need to be applied every two to three
years, as opposed to every six months to a year for regular
paint.
